World Thinking Day

Today is the Girl Guides World Thinking day, this year they are asking about the impact that the Movement has on the lives of it’s members.

I am not currently a member of the association but I was for years thanks to my Mum’s dedication to the organisation. My Mum joined the Guides when she was 10 years old and was actively involved until she had a stroke 4 years ago.

Mum as a Guide

Mum was a Guide as a girl in Canada and was a leader there. She tells me that when I was 18 months old we snowshoed into a Guide camp. When we moved to England Mum soon found the local Guide company, and she was the leader for more years than I think she would appreciate me mentioning! She also served in many other roles but I think it is safe to say her favourite was the County Boating Adviser, where she got to share her love of the water with so many Guides and Brownies.

Mum Kayaking

I naturally joined the Brownies, Guides and then Rangers, I also spent some time helping out as an assistant leader. I have so many fun memories of adventures. Camps in Somerset. The world guiding centre in Switzerland. Hurricane Charlie. Kangaroo court. Smores. Being woken before dawn to hike to see the sunrise. King Arthur’s court. Christmas in July.

Are you or have you been a member of the Guide association? What are your favourite memories?
